What is a PNG file?

Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster image format that uses lossless compression and supports transparency. It's ideal for web graphics, UI assets, and screenshots where crisp edges and alpha channels matter.

How to open a PNG file?

Most operating systems open PNGs by default in their image viewer, and all modern browsers display them inline. If you run into compatibility limits (uploads, email size, print), convert your PNG to JPG, WEBP, or TIFF with the converter above.

Design tools like GIMP or Adobe Photoshop handle PNGs well for editing, exporting, and transparency tweaks.

Each pair has its own page with target-specific encode notes, file-size expectations, and metadata behavior.

PNG to JPG

Standard EXIF survives; alpha transparency drops to a flat background.

PNG to TIFF

EXIF, XMP, and ICC profile survive; lossless container with room for high-bit-depth.

PNG to WEBP

EXIF and transparency survive; smaller file with the same metadata block.

PNG to AVIF

EXIF, XMP, and alpha channel survive; color profile may be replaced.
