Why Remove File Metadata?

Stripping metadata is a critical step for protecting your privacy and securing your information before sharing files online.

Protect Your Privacy

Photos and documents can contain hidden GPS coordinates, author names, and device information. Removing this data prevents you from accidentally sharing sensitive personal details.

Enhance Your Security

Metadata can reveal software versions, operating systems, and internal network paths, which could be exploited by malicious actors. Stripping it reduces your digital footprint.

Share Files Safely

Clean your files before sending them to clients, posting on social media, or submitting them for work. Ensure that only the content you intend to share is actually shared.

Our Secure Process

We prioritize your privacy with a transparent and secure workflow. Here’s exactly what happens to your file.

Upload Your File Securely

Select or drag-and-drop the photo, video, PDF, document, or audio file you want to clean. We never store your original file.

We Match the Right Cleaning Tool

Our API detects the format and runs targeted, open-source utilities to remove GPS/EXIF data from photos, clear document properties from PDFs and Office files, and wipe track tags from video and audio.

Content Stays the Same

We avoid re-encoding whenever possible—images and docs are scrubbed in place, and videos use metadata-only commands—so quality and fidelity stay intact.

Immediate Download & Deletion

Your browser downloads the cleaned copy right away. The temporary server file is deleted as soon as processing completes.

What Metadata Do We Remove?

The removal API pairs each format with the right cleaning tool, scrubbing location data, document properties, and media container tags while leaving the content untouched. Here’s what typically gets cleared:

  • EXIF, IPTC, and XMP tags (camera data, GPS coordinates, timestamps)
  • Maker notes, embedded thumbnails, and proprietary trailers in photos
  • Author, title, company, and revision info in PDFs and Office documents
  • PDF information dictionaries and embedded XMP packets
  • Video container tags such as location, camera model, and track titles
  • Audio metadata including ID3/Vorbis comments, album art, and track numbers
  • Comments, captions, and hidden notes added by editing software
  • Container-level comments and custom tags that can reveal your workflow

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this process reversible?

No. Once metadata is removed, it is gone permanently. We do not keep a copy of your original file, so please make sure you have a backup if you need to preserve the original metadata.

How do you remove metadata from different files?

We detect the file type and run dedicated, open-source utilities built for that format—cleaning EXIF/GPS tags on photos and PDFs, scrubbing document properties from Office files, and dropping track metadata from videos and audio—with tools like ExifTool, FFmpeg, and MAT2.

Does removing metadata reduce image or video quality?

The cleaning step targets metadata only. We avoid re-encoding by scrubbing images and documents in place and using metadata-only copy commands for video and audio, so visual and audio quality stay the same.

Are my files safe?

Yes. Your file is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection, processed on our server, and then immediately and permanently deleted. No one ever sees your file, and we do not store it.

Which file types can you clean?

Most common formats are supported, including JPG, PNG, HEIC, GIF, TIFF, MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV, PDF, DOCX, PPTX, ODT, MP3, WAV, FLAC, and M4A. If your file opens normally, there is a good chance we can remove its metadata.

Why did the file size change?

Metadata can sometimes take up a surprising amount of space, especially in high-resolution photos with extensive EXIF data or documents with embedded information. Removing it will typically reduce the overall file size.
