JPG conversion behavior matrix

Every supported JPG conversion: what survives, what drops, what gets regenerated.

JPG → PNG
Preserved

EXIF (written into PNG's eXIf chunk on output), XMP, IPTC, ICC profile

Dropped

MakerNote may corrupt during EXIF rewrite (see JPG → WEBP note).

Regenerated

Embedded thumbnail regenerated; PNG output gets fresh chunks

JPG → WEBP
Preserved

EXIF, XMP, IPTC, ICC profile

Dropped

MakerNote (EXIF tag 0x927c) may corrupt during EXIF rewrite: its absolute internal offsets break unless the converter copies it as an opaque blob.

Regenerated

Thumbnail regenerated as a fresh WEBP-style preview

JPG → AVIF
Preserved

EXIF, XMP, IPTC, ICC profile

Dropped

MakerNote (EXIF tag 0x927c) may corrupt during EXIF rewrite: its absolute internal offsets break unless the converter copies it as an opaque blob.

Regenerated

Thumbnail regenerated; AVIF HDR color-encoding fields default to sRGB (CICP 1/13/6) unless source had HDR data

JPG → TIFF
Preserved

EXIF, XMP, IPTC, ICC profile

MakerNote may corrupt during EXIF rewrite (see JPG → WEBP note).

What is a JPG file?

JPG (JPEG) is a lossy compressed image format built for small file sizes and wide compatibility. It's great for photos and fast sharing, but it doesn't support transparency and can introduce compression artifacts.

How to open a JPG file?

JPG files open in virtually every operating system, browser, and photo viewer by default. If you need transparency or lossless edits, convert your JPG to PNG, WEBP, AVIF, or TIFF using the converter above.

Tools like GIMP or Adobe Photoshop can edit JPGs and export to other formats when needed.

Browse JPG converters by target

Each pair has its own page with target-specific encode notes, file-size expectations, and metadata behavior.

JPG to PNG

EXIF, XMP, ICC profile carry across; output is lossless from this point forward.

JPG to WEBP

Standard EXIF and copyright fields survive; expect 25–35% file-size savings.

JPG to AVIF

Cleanest metadata path: EXIF, XMP, ICC profile all carry across.

JPG to TIFF

EXIF, XMP, and ICC profile carry across; lossy data lands in a lossless container.
